In 1995 Chuck Kepner and Matt Fourie met again after they've first met in 1979, 1980 and 1983. In 1983 Chuck Kepner established Kepner & Associates and Matt Fourie established Rational Management Consultants. The aim of the 1995 meeting for them was to pool their collective experiences and investigate a possible new venture using the rational and intuitive problem solving skills learned over the years. In 1997 Thinking Dimensions International was established with Chuck and Matt being the Directors and launching the initial Problem Solving and Decision Making skills workshops.
This initial humble beginning quickly spread into the rest of the international arena adding countries from Europe, Africa and Asia. By the year 2000, Thinking Dimensions has grown into a training company with 12 international partners in the network. In these initial years Thinking Dimensions mostly worked in the manufacturing, production and financial services industries.
During the period 2000 and 2005 Thinking Dimensions evolved from a pure training company to also providing consulting services, mostly facilitating in-company teams on how to find the root cause of a problem and how to make collaborative decisions. This was also the period that saw the focus of client servicing change from regional representation to that of "client exclusiveness". This allowed each of the network associates to take full responsibility for their client wherever they might be in the world.
At a global Thinking Dimensions associate meeting in 2006 it was decided to have more cohesive network cooperation between all the network partners to make it possible to procure global contracts that would benefit all associates and improve the "seamless" networking efforts of Thinking Dimensions. An informal group of network associates started working together on certain contracts but did not include the whole of the network. At the next meeting the majority of associates agreed Thinking Dimensions needs to make this arrangement more formal.
In 2006 the application focus of the Root Cause Analysis methodology also started to change. Matt Fourie spearheaded the effort to 'adopt and adapt' the traditional root cause analysis methodology for the IT industry. Thinking Dimensions then procured their first clients in the IT industry and started customizing the RCA methodology. The early results indicated a highly promising new possibility for Thinking Dimensions and it's network of associates. By the end of that year Thinking Dimensions formally made this workshop available to IT clients.
In August 2009 Thinking Dimensions Management took a decision to incorporate new life into the organization. It was decided to renew the management with more experienced global managers and Tim Lewko was brought on board as a joint Managing Partner. This opened up new opportunities to everyone in the network. Today Thinking Dimensions is the thought leader in Organization Strategy formulation consulting as well as ITRCA training and consulting. Thinking Dimensions developed the IT Incident Investigation process and approach to such an extend that it attracted an industry award for their innovation in this area.
"One of the biggest frustrations for Problem Management staff is re-creating the information involved in an incident. This also creates one of the largest costs to IT divisions & organisations as the difficulty in finding the correct root cause may mean the root of an incident situation is not eliminated and the incident keeps recurring.
It is time to put an end to this, because there is a very effective way to rectify it. The most important challenge is to create a consistent Model and Process, which would earn the respect and support of Incident and Problem Investigators. A model that removes the confusion and inaccuracy with terminology where some companies have hundreds of causes to work through and on the other side of the scale some companies are looking at only three root causes, one of which is “Human Error”".
